Settle's historic Folly is the venue for a new exhibition, opening Tuesday 5th August 2003 of paintings by Celia King and sculpture by Ruth Pavla Davey.
Celia King trained as a lithographer, etcher and painter. She has paintings in many private collections in Britain and abroad. A number of her etchings are in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
She has lived in Settle for many years and has worked as Head of the departments of Art in both Settle High School and Giggleswick School.
Having grown up in Cornwall she has found great delight in all aspects of the sea. This exhibition echoes this passion as well as her love of the Dales scenery in its various moods. Rivers and waterfalls replace the sea in her work while limestone pavements and many other hidden places and their contained wild flowers continue to inspire her.
Ruth Pavla Davey lives and works in Cumbria. She has a degree in sculpture and ceramics and for many years ran the department of three-dimensional art at Sedbergh School. Throughout that period she continued to be involved with her own art work, as well as given independent courses in personal creativity.
Her special interest in sacred art has led her to look for ways of expressing a sense of spirit and timelessness through the human figure, often inspired by visits to galleries and numerous sites throughout the world.
Her work is in many private collections in Britain, Europe and the USA. She recently completed a large original crucifix for a new church. She especially enjoys making privately commissioned inspirational sculptures which may be modelled in clay, and fired, or cast in a variety of media.
All the sculpture in this exhibition has been cast by hand from originals, and individually coloured by the artist in antique bronze, gold bronze, or weatherproof stone finishes. Each piece is therefore unique.
If you would like to discuss a commission in any size or medium, for garden or interior, public or private space, please contact the artist on 015396 20176. Prices begin at £250.
All Ruth Pavla Davey's pieces exhibited in the Folly are produced in editions, and may be ordered subject to availability, to be collected when the exhibition closes.
